"There is no respect for others without humility in one's self." Henri Frederic Amiel. I saw this quote, and it resonated with something that's happening nowadays. People are so arrogant in their views and beliefs that they forget everyone is entitled to have their own, and we must respect that. Some groups are constantly trying to shove their views down others' throats, and they end up trampling on others' beliefs. Sadly, we encounter more and more people who, if you don't think like them, treat you as if you were a moron or as if their opinions were the only ones valid. The problem, as the quote says, is a lack of humility. When you are arrogant, you tend to believe you are the only one right, and your narcissistic character drives you to gaslight everyone who does not think like you.
We need more humility to establish healthy conversations and debates without belittling those who think differently. We live in a country that promotes freedom of speech, but unfortunately, some groups are quick to silence those who think differently from them, or they immediately label them as intolerant, ignorant, or stupid. I miss the time when we used to sit down and have debates with a group of people who did not think alike, and we treated each other with respect, learned from each other's points of view, listened to each other, and talked without offending.
I invite you to foster positive relationships without disrespecting those who think differently or making them feel less by being selfish or arrogant. Let's be humble, value and respect each other, and agree to disagree respectfully. Here are some ways you can foster humility and treat others with respect:
1. Follow Christ’s Example – Jesus, the King of Kings, humbled Himself to serve others (Philippians 2:5-8). By keeping His example in mind, we can strive to serve others with love and compassion rather than seeking recognition.
2. Practice Active Listening – Truly listening to others without interrupting or formulating a response while they speak shows respect and humility. It also demonstrates that we value their thoughts and feelings.
3. Admit Mistakes and Learn from Them – A humble heart acknowledges when it’s wrong and seeks to grow from the experience. Being willing to apologize and learn fosters stronger relationships and personal growth.
4. Choose Gratitude Over Pride – Recognizing that every good thing in our lives is a gift from God keeps us grounded and grateful. Humility flourishes when we acknowledge God as our provider and sustainer.
5. Serve Without Expectation—Whether at home, work, or in the community, seek opportunities to serve others without expecting anything in return. True humility finds joy in putting others’ needs before our own.
6. Avoid Comparison – Humility teaches us to celebrate others’ successes without jealousy or comparison. Trusting in God’s unique plan for each of us allows us to appreciate the gifts and talents of those around us.
7. Speak with Kindness and Grace – Our words can uplift or tear down. Speaking with gentleness and encouragement shows respect and reflects a heart that seeks to honor God and others.
8. Let Go of the Need to Be Right – Sometimes, humility means choosing peace over being right. Prioritizing relationships over pride allows us to build deeper connections with those around us.
9. Pray for a Humble Heart - Ask God daily to cultivate humility in your heart and help you see others through His eyes. Prayer keeps us aligned with God’s will and helps us grow in grace.
10. Honor Others Above Yourself – Romans 12:10 reminds us to “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Choosing to elevate others through encouragement, support, and respect brings glory to God.
When we intentionally cultivate humility, we create an atmosphere that reflects Christ’s love in our relationships, actions, and words. Embracing humility in our daily lives enables us to demonstrate Christ’s love and grace in everything we do. By choosing to serve, listen to, and honor others with a sincere heart, we foster an environment of kindness and respect that glorifies God. True humility isn't about thinking less of ourselves; it's about thinking of ourselves less and focusing on how we can uplift those around us. Let's honor Jesus’ legacy of selflessness, unconditional love, and service. Let's be humble in every area of our lives and treat others with the same compassion Jesus had for us.
