Finding Our True Identity in Christ

Writer's picture: Sylvia RiveraSylvia Rivera

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” This quote speaks about our constant search for who we are and why we are here. We are constantly searching to fill a void that only Jesus can fill. At VPS, we encourage our Warriors to seek their identity not in the world but in Christ. Too often, we place our value on things that cannot truly satisfy us, like popularity, achievements, appearances, likes, friends, or the approval of others. If we are not careful, we start letting the world define us rather than God. This search for identity reminds me of Cinderella. She was searching for her identity but placed her trust in the wrong hands, allowing her stepmother to control her life, leading only to heartache. However, in the end, her identity is revealed unexpectedly through a glass slipper. The good news is that we do not need a glass slipper to discover who we are. Our identity is already been granted in Christ. When we follow Him, we learn that we are not defined by the world but by the One who created us.

In Christ, we are:

🔹 The apple of His eye.

🔹 Fearfully and wonderfully made.

🔹 Redeemed and forgiven.

🔹 His workmanship, created for good works.

🔹 A holy nation and His chosen people.

🔹 Strong, victorious, and more than conquerors.

🔹 Loved beyond measure.

🔹 His sons and daughters.

🔹 The light of the world.

Here are a few Bible verses about our identity in Christ:

1.   2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2.   1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

3.   Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

4.   2 Timothy 1:7 - For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love, and self-control.

5.   John 1:12 - But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

6.   John 1:11-13 - "He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

7.   1 Corinthians 12:26-27 - "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it."

Instead of searching for identity in things that fade, seek Jesus. He alone gives us true purpose. The world offers us temporary labels that will never satisfy us. When we embrace our identity in Christ, we start walking confidently in His love! So, Warriors, stand firm in your faith, seek Jesus above all else, and let His love define you. Your worth is not in what the world says but in who God says you are, fearfully and wonderfully made!
