In the dictionary, gratitude is the quality of being thankful and ready to show appreciation for and return kindness. Biblically, gratefulness is so much more. The concept of gratitude in the Bible involves acknowledging that we have not achieved everything on our own but instead rely on others, especially God, and should express appreciation for their actions towards us. Expressing gratitude is closely linked to experiencing joy. Joy is a direct result of having a thankful heart, and demonstrating joy is a way to express gratitude. The Bible teaches us the importance of living with a grateful heart daily. Instead of focusing on what we lack or what is missing, we must focus on the blessings we have received, the lessons we have learned, and the things we have accomplished to live a life of gratefulness.
Every day brings a new reason to be grateful. Opening our eyes this morning is a great reason to be thankful for. The fact that we are breathing air is another reason to be grateful. If we take time from our busy lives and look around, we will find many things to be thankful for. Unfortunately, we tend to focus on the things we do not have and the circumstances that are not like we would like them to be, forgetting how blessed we are. When we take a moment to pause and appreciate the positives in our lives, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude that affects our overall feelings and perspective. It’s a reminder to shift our mindset towards thankfulness, acknowledging the blessings, peace, and opportunities for growth that exist even amid difficulties.
I understand being grateful when everything is going well is easy, but the real challenge comes when things don't go as expected or seem against us. It's during those times that being thankful becomes difficult. Knowing how difficult it is; here are a few tips to help you be grateful amid trials:
Spend time in prayer - Seeking God’s presence and guidance during difficult times. Use this time to thank God for His presence, peace, and for the strength He provides.
2. Reflect on God's Word- Find comfort and wisdom in scripture. Reflect on verses
about God’s faithfulness and provision during trials, such as Romans 8:28 “And we
know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who
have been called according to his purpose."
3. Count your blessings- Make a deliberate effort to count your blessings amidst
challenges. Keep a gratitude journal and write down specific things you’re thankful for,
even amid trials.
4. Lean on others- Seek support from fellow believers or a church community. Share
your struggles and pray together, finding strength in fellowship and encouragement.
5. Serve others- Look for opportunities to serve others, even when facing challenges.
Serving can shift your focus from your difficulties to the needs of others, fostering a
grateful heart.
By anchoring yourself in faith and gratitude, you can navigate trials with peace and hope, knowing that God is with you and working through your circumstances. Remember that God's will is better than anything you've asked for or imagined and His plans for you are always bigger. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11. Let's be grateful for His love, grace, and peace amid the storm. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7. When you trust in God, you will see reasons to be grateful even amid life's storms. When you place your trust in God, you will start to recognize reasons to feel grateful even during life's challenging moments.
