A Warrior's Heart: Loving like Christ

Writer: Sylvia RiveraSylvia Rivera

At VPS, our Warriors are not just students, they are young leaders who reflect Christ’s love and strength. We strive to cultivate a positive and growth-promoting environment that fosters Christ-like character in our students. We encourage them to seek a heart like Jesus's heart: a kind, compassionate, and loving heart. We are all called to conform to the image of Jesus Christ by actively imitating His actions, embracing His commandments, and embodying His heart. "Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:1-2. We strive to instill in our Warriors a genuine desire to embrace Christ's nature and follow His steps. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." Philippians 2: 3-7. Jesus serves as the ideal role model for us, and we aspire for them to follow His example. Jesus's teachings and actions guide us on how to live with love, compassion, and integrity.

We desire to nurture a Christ-like character in them, reflecting qualities of strength, kindness, faith, and love. We want them to demonstrate selfless and unconditional love in their daily lives. To achieve this, we need you as our partners. We need you to reinforce our lessons by:

  1. Modeling Christ's love through your actions: Teach your child that love is demonstrated through actions, not with words. Just as Jesus served others selflessly, we can show kindness, humility, and patience to everyone we encounter. Giving them examples of how this can be done, like helping a friend, volunteering, or supporting someone in need, can help them understand.

  2. Practicing Forgiveness: Share how forgiveness is a vital part of love. Teach that loving like Jesus means forgiving others, even when it is difficult. Jesus forgave those who hurt Him, and we are called to do the same to reflect His love and grace.

  3. Loving our enemies: Teach your Warriors to live out Matthew 5:44, where Jesus says, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Loving like Christ means showing kindness even to those who may be difficult to love, responding with empathy rather than anger.

  4. Serving others with a humble heart: Talk about the importance of serving others with humility. Just like Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, we can humbly serve others in our communities. Acts of service, big or small, are powerful expressions of love.

  5. Loving the unlovable: Discuss how Jesus loved people who were often rejected by society, like tax collectors and sinners. Teach them that as Warriors, we can reach out to the marginalized or those who feel lonely, helping them feel seen and valued.

  6. Building compassionate relationships: Teach your child the value of building genuine, loving relationships. Jesus spent time with His disciples and others, offering love and compassion. Encourage your child to connect with others, show interest in their well-being, and create relationships based on trust and love.

  7. Praying for others: Teach them to pray like Jesus. We can reflect Christ’s love by praying for others, asking God to bless them, heal them, and guide them in His love.

  8. Encouraging others: Focus on how Jesus encouraged and lifted others. Encouraging someone in their faith, studies, or struggles shows love and care. Teach them to be intentional in uplifting others with words of affirmation and support.

  9. Loving with compassion and sacrifice: Teach them about 1 John 3:16“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.” Teach that love requires sacrifice and being willing to put others’ needs before our own, just as Christ did for us.

  10. Teaching love to others: Encourage your child to share the love of Christ by teaching their friends or others about God’s love. Sharing His love with others is part of living out a Warrior’s heart.

We believe that a Christ-like heart that loves, treats others with kindness and respect, and serves selflessly is the foundation of true growth. As we instruct your child, we are honored to partner with you in nurturing this heart, guiding them to reflect Christ’s love in everything they do. As parents and guardians, your role is vital in shaping our Warriors’ hearts. Together, we can model patience, empathy, compassion, and grace, creating an environment where our children not only learn academic lessons but also learn how to walk in love, respect, and compassion.
